Serpent of Light Teachings

Isabelle Meawasige

The First People who inhabited the Earth were highly in tune with the Earth and all that lived on her. The animals were relatives to the People.  They often brought medicine to the People. Anything that was good was considered medicine…

I am called Isabelle Meawasige (Blue Fire Woman), Bear Clan Woman of the Serpent River First Nation, Ojibway.  I would like to tell you a little about my People and my lands on Lake Huron. The People of the Serpent River have always lived on that big lake and have a distinct relationship with the spirits of the water.  At the time of the signing of the treaties, they referred to themselves as the, “Children of the Serpent” . This is evident in the community because everywhere you look, there is snake medicine all around. The serpent has always meant a time of change and transformation. It is a time to work on developing self-sufficiency and self reliance.  Serpent has teachings for every indigenous society  from the mound builders to the Meso- Americans and the feathered and flying serpent.

The Orientals, they believe that the serpent is a sign of the sexual/creative life force within the people.  They call this energy, the Kundalini energy and this fire lies at the base of the spine. As we age and get older, this energy rises up, opening up the energy center ‘s in the body.

The snake has the ability to shed its skin and before it sheds the skin, the eyes cloud over and turn aqua green.  As the skin begins to shed, the eyes become clear, again.

Whenever the Serpent shows itself the People who understand the medicine of Serpent, they know it is time to change. They begin making plans to change and it affects the whole community.  Every spring, the people bring out their pipes and prepare to make offerings to the spirit of the Serpent, who lives in and around the territories of the Serpent River.  All of the serpent teachings are brought out at that time. And the old People of the Serpent teach the younger people, what it means to be a Child of the Serpent.
